Camden County Court Records
Camden County court records are the official case dockets and files generated by the Superior Court of New Jersey in Camden County, the primary trial-level court for the county. These documents, including filings, motions, orders, and decrees, chronicle the court proceedings of civil disputes, probate cases, family law actions, and criminal charges.
Custodianship over these records is shared between the Superior Court of New Jersey and the Camden City Surrogate’s Court. While the Superior Court keeps records of civil disputes, criminal felonies, and general family law (including divorce, domestic violence, and child custody), the Surrogate Court maintains probate records and adoption files.
The court records of Camden County are part of the broader body of public records, which include vital records, arrest reports, and (sometimes) federal case files. While these documents are governed by the state’s Open Records Act, court records are governed by New Jersey Court Rule 1:38, which defines procedures for public access. Generally, the county’s public records are governed by separate rules and usually maintained on separate databases; nonetheless, these records are interrelated, with information from one system often drawing on and contributing to the others.

Camden County Court Records Search
Court records in Camden County show the history of legal cases handled by Superior and Municipal Courts. The public can search for and view these cases as follows:
Online
The statewide Find a Case page at njcourts.gov allows the public to search for civil, criminal, and municipal cases.
For civil matters involving money, contract disputes, small claims, or civil negligence, one may use the ACMS/Civil Case Jackets Public Access tool to view case jackets. A case jacket is a "digital container" that holds every document filed or generated throughout proceedings. Individuals may query this portal by name or case number.
When searching by docket number, the user may filter by county (Camden), case type (civil), case number, and case year. For a name search, they can select an individual name or a business name. In some cases, the user can download a copy of a legal complaint, answer, or motion.
For criminal matters, inquirers can view case status, charges, and hearing or sentencing information on the PROMIS/Gavel Public Access portal. This portal is not as comprehensive as its civil case counterpart; it displays only case summaries, not the actual filings.
Finally, the Municipal Courts Case Search (MCCS) tool provides case information from city or town courts. Basic case records for DUI, speeding tickets, and other minor infractions can be accessed here. One can search by ticket number, complaint number, driver’s license number, or name.
Where a case’s documents are not available through the previously mentioned methods, the Superior Court provides a platform for the public to complete the Records Request Form 10200 and submit it through the Judiciary Electronic Document Submission (JEDS) portal. Note that this route only works for closed case records and non-probate records.

Criminal Records Access in Camden County
Certain individuals or organizations may require a Camden County criminal record for a job application, immigration, or other purposes. County court clerks cannot provide this type of comprehensive background check. Inquirers can request this only from the State Bureau of Identification (SBI) division of the New Jersey State Police.
The SBI provides a Form 212B Name Check service. Anyone can use this service to request a subject’s Criminal History Record Information (CHRI), provided they have the relevant name, date of birth, Social Security number, and other details. Form 212B can be filled out online or after creating an account. Each criminal history name check costs $20 ($12 for volunteer work), payable by credit or debit card.
Form 212A is a more serious criminal background check used by police and state agencies to determine an individual’s suitability for employment or licensing.
The public can, however, inspect the details of a specific criminal trial, such as the indictment, the plea form, or the judgment of conviction. This can be done online through the PROMIS/Gavel portal or at the Superior Court criminal division, 101 South 5th Street, Camden, NJ.
Camden County Probate Records
Camden County probate records document the legal process for administering the estates of deceased persons and managing the assets of vulnerable individuals. The local Surrogate’s Court oversees uncontested wills and probate filings, while contested matters are under the jurisdiction of the Superior Court Chancery Division.
Estate records in Camden include documents pertaining to wills, administrative charters, guardianships for legal minors, and conservatorships for incapacitated adults. Common proceedings in such cases include probating a will to distribute assets, administering an estate with inventories and creditor notices, appointing guardians for children after a parent’s death, or establishing conservatorships to manage finances for a mental health patient.
Recent Camden County probate records (post-2010) are available online through the Surrogate’s Court’s records database. Case dockets for contested probate matters may be available on the statewide Find a Case portal. Older or detailed files typically require a trip to the Surrogate’s Court. Note that the Surrogate’s office does not currently provide walk-in services. Inquirers must make an appointment before their visit.
Certain probate matters, such as adoptions, conservatorships, and mental health guardianships, remain confidential to protect privacy.
Camden County Family Court Records
The Family Court Division of the Camden County Superior Court handles matters such as divorce, paternity, custody, parenting time, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, and other family law proceedings.
Public dockets for these cases show status and hearing dates and are available on the NJ Courts public access portal. Inquirers may search by name or docket number (using the FM prefix for family matters). Due to the sensitive nature of most family law matters, full access to the records listed below is limited to direct parties and their attorneys:
- Adoption (N.J.S.A. 9:3-51; 9:3-52)
- Juvenile delinquency (N.J.S.A. 2A:4A-60)
- Domestic violence complaints or records (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-33)
- Abuse and neglect (N.J.S.A. 9:6-8.10a)
- Child support/family finance (Court Rule 5:4-2(f); 1:38-3(d)(14))
- Mediation (Court Rule 1:40-4(d) )
The public may visit the main courthouse at 101 South Fifth Street, Camden, NJ, for same-day lookups on open cases. Visitors typically need to provide a photo ID to verify their legal eligibility to view requested documents.
